The goal is to create a set of lively discussions surrounding self publishing - and I'd like to contribute any answers I may - I've been a buyer for a bookstore chain, managed the marketing department of one of the NY publishing companies, created a publishing acquisitions staff, and now own a publishing services company working with traditional publishers and authors who want to publish their own books. Ask me anything at all, and I'll give you a solid straight answer (or, tell you who might know the answer if I don't). thanks for asking ! _ Ray

Hi there, dep. Nice idea for a group. I hope it flourishes.

From an Irish perspective, one of the major problems about the North American market is warehousing and distribution. Even amazon.com, which might be a fallback, won't accept titles unless they're warehoused in the U.S. Small Press Distribution used to fill this role pretty well for many small presses (which are often primarily for self-publishing) in the U.K. and Ireland, but I'm told that they're getting more picky, more expensive and less efficient.

Are you aware of any other solutions to this problem?

If you aren't opposed to digitally produced books, the best solution is to use either a print-on-demand company like mine to distribute your book (shameless self-promotion) or set up your title with Lightning Source. This doesn't solve the 'how to get my book on bookstore shelves' issue, but it does make the book widely available - specifically Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders/Walden and via the two big distribution houses Ingram Book and Baker & Taylor.

Thanks, dep, but I'm already working some stuff through Lightning Source. (They have a presence in the U.K.) As you know, though, there are very significant constraints on format if you use POD: there's only a very limited set of templates available to choose from. That's why I'm interested in discovering other routes to the reader's hand.

Have you tried Baker&Taylor here in the US? (btol.com [btol.com]) We sell our 'non-POD' format books (like hardcover childrens titles and coffee table books) through them.

I'm planning to self publish a book later this year... it is a simple collection of stories and articles I've written with a local theme (Northern California, Klamath River Valley). It will be my only self-published book... unless you want to count e-books too.
